We believe in high-quality care and excellent service.

In addition to wellness care, emergency care, and parasite prevention, we also spay and neuter cats and dogs. During these appointments, we offer reduced rates for dog and cat surgeries and all preventative health care that includes vaccinations, heartworm testing, dental care, wellness exams, complete parasite control, and many other health procedures.

At the end of the day, you can expect friendly care from hometown doctors who understand you and your pet and the latest in pet and animal care. All of this is for one thing—a healthier, happier best friend.

Wellness Care

Humans and animals have one thing in common, annual wellness exams are important! When you and your pet come to see the team at Northwest Wisconsin Veterinary Servicess, we’ll be there for a full nose-to-tail exam. This also gives our team a chance to speak directly with you and gather information on what your pet is up to at home. This information helps our doctors and staff identify medical problems and any other issues that can affect your pet’s health and quality of life. The more you bring your pet in for regular wellness exams, the better chance we have of catching a medical issue before it develops.

These appointments are important even if your pet is in perfect health, as it’s also good for keeping a baseline of your pet’s health as they age. We’ll also use this time to ask you questions about your pet’s behavior, appetite, exercise habits, and regular activities at home. This is also an excellent time for us to discuss any routine diagnostic testing that may benefit your pet or to recommend any vaccinations that may be due. If your pet seems healthy, a wellness examination is a good opportunity to note any changes, such as weight gain or loss or other subtle changes that may not be evident at home.

At these appointments, you can expect some of the following treatments:

  • Annual physical exams
  • Vaccinations
  • Pet dental care
  • Annual parasite screenings and prevention
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Annual blood work
Dental Care

Studies have shown that 70% of adult cats and 80% of adult dogs show oral disease symptoms, which include symptoms like bad breath, plaque build-up, excessive drooling, sore or bleeding gums when eating or chewing, and decreased appetite.

At Northwest Wisconsin Veterinary Servicess, we take your pet’s oral health very seriously because we know that dental disease can be associated with other serious health problems such as heart disease and kidney disease. Even if you think your pet’s teeth and gums are okay, we can offer expert advice to help you keep them that way. Regular dental checkups for your pet are just as important as they are for you.

When a cleaning is needed, we’ll be there to make sure everything goes smoothly. Dental exams and cleaning are performed under general anesthesia for a safe and thorough procedure. During these cleanings, your pet’s teeth are cleaned of plaque and calculus, and the tooth enamel is polished, followed by a fluoride treatment to further protect the teeth and strengthen enamel.

Surgical Services
When your pet is getting an operation under our roof, you can expect a safe and clean environment.

Dr. Jill is a skilled surgeon and enjoys the surgery portion of the practice.

We use the safest anesthesia possible for each patient’s needs; we recommend presurgical blood screening just as you would need before having surgery yourself.  The blood screening is done in house on the Idexx Chemistry analyzer.  Patient monitoring is done by pulse oximetry.

Some of the common procedures performed by our Dr. are the following:

  •  Routine spays and neuters
  •  Dewclaw removal and tail amputation
  •  Hernia repair
  •  Entropion and Ectropion repair
  •  Cruciate repair surgery
  •  Luxating patella surgery
  •  Mastectomy
  •  Lump removal
  •  Gastrotomy and Enterotomy
  •  Bladder stone removal

We will consult on any case and give our best recommendation or possible referral.

Spay / Neuter and Wellness Clinic

The Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic was started in June 2006 as a way to increase the number of animals that receive preventative care.

The clinic is available to anyone and operates on an appointment basis.  The clinic offers reduced rates on spays, neuters, and all routine care, including the following:  Vaccinations, deworming, heartworm testing and preventatives, nail trims, ear cleaning, and anal sac expressions.

Pre-operative procedures: We offer early spay and neutering and only require females need to be 12 weeks or older and males need to be 10 weeks or older. We ask that they have all food and treats be removed the night before at 8:00 pm, water is ok. Surgery drop off time is between 7:30 am, and 8:30 am. Generally, the pets are allowed to go home early afternoon and as late as 5:00 pm.

Dr. Jill Armstrong has over 20 years of surgical experience and performs surgeries 5 days a week. Please help with the feral cat overpopulation and bring feral cats in for neuters or spays.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations help us protect your pet from infections, the same way that vaccines help humans fight off diseases and infections. Vaccines are special proteins that prime the immune system to fight off specific infections. They work in two ways: to reduce the severity of such diseases should they strike or completely prevent infection.

Vaccines are important for all stages of your pet’s life, period.

Our pets are faced with many deadly infectious diseases, and vaccines can help protect them. Over the years, vaccines against dangerous diseases have saved millions of pets and virtually eliminated some fatal diseases that were once common.

It comes down to one thing—many of the diseases and illnesses that can affect dogs and cats are preventable with a suitable pet vaccination protocol.

Parasite Prevention

Like vaccinations, protecting your pet from parasites like fleas, ticks, and heartworm are vital to your pet’s health. Fleas, ticks, and heartworm can affect your pet’s health and even be fatal. Luckily, it’s easy to protect them from these scary parasites.

The basics:

Fleas are small, jumping insects that live off of the blood of animals. They can carry dangerous diseases and will often cause allergic dermatitis” severe itching” in pets.

Ticks are external parasites that live off of the bodily fluids of animals. They can carry diseases from one animal to another and are the main cause of the spread of diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis,

Heartworm is a parasite that can live in the heart of dogs and cats. Mosquitoes carry the worm from one infected animal to another. Several hundred worms can live in the heart of a dog, and infection from the parasite causes significant damage and can be fatal.

According to the American Heartworm Society (AHS), heartworm continues to be a problem in our area, so it’s important to protect against it.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive form of treatment that stimulates your pet’s body’s natural healing and pain control response. It can be used as a standalone therapy or as a complement to other treatment methods. We accomplish this using a small handheld device—the doctor applies a low-level laser to the area on question, stimulating normal cellular function. This results in faster wound healing and enhanced pain relief. Best of all, because laser therapy requires no medication or surgery, there are no harmful side effects.

Laser therapy can be used to address a broad spectrum of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Disc Disease
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Cranial Cruciate Ligament
  • Dental Problems
  • Chronic Pain and Inflammation
  • Dermatological Conditions
  • Lick Granulomas

This service provides decreased pain, enhanced mobility, and shorter recovery periods for your pet.

Emergency Care
We have a veterinarian and personnel on duty 5 days a week who are trained and equipped to handle any urgent care your pet has. Usually, an emergency team consists of at least one veterinarian and several technicians working together to save a pet’s life. Emergencies can be things such as snail bait poisoning, hit by a car, and chocolate ingestion. If you ever feel that your pet needs emergency treatment, do not hesitate to immediately call or come in. If possible, it is best to call before coming in so that a team member can advise you on your particular emergency. We can be reached at 715-268-6226.

If you are calling after hours and have an emergency, please call Animal Emergency Referral Center in Oakdale, MN at 651-501-3766.

We are also available for urgent care when the condition is not life-threatening. If you feel your pet needs to be seen before you can get an appointment, our veterinarians will work to “squeeze” you in between scheduled appointments. When you arrive, our receptionists will be able to give you an estimate on how long you may have to wait to be seen.
